I understand that when you embark on a low carb or ketogenic diet, you must wean yourself off your old foods. Bread is ubiquitous and it is hard to quit because it is a common, key part of our base diets. Still, we should all try to get it out of our diets because of its effect on our blood sugar and the bad stuff that comes from dwarf wheat.
This bread could be bad news for anyone. Why? Here’s the ingredient line:
BREAD BASE (MODIFIED WHEAT STARCH, WHEAT GLUTEN, INULIN OR CHICORY VEGETABLE FIBER, OAT FIBER, WHEAT PROTEIN ISOLATE), WATER, SOYBEAN OIL, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF EACH OF THE FOLLOWING: YEAST, SALT, SORBIC ACID, (MOLD INHIBITOR) FULLY HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN OIL, DISTILLED VINEGAR, ASCORBIC ACID, CALCIUM PROPIONATE (MOLD INHIBITOR), ENZYMES.
It’s very long. Bread is simple food. Mostly starch.
This stuff is mostly made from wheat gluten and fibers. Wheat gluten is a problematic protein for many due to allergic responses and possible disruptions to the intestinal lining.
The next ingredient is inulin – a sweet-tasting soluble fiber that can wreak havoc on the GI tract of many people. High quantities of inulin can tear up your insides – giving you things like explosive gas and diarrhea. I know this from personal experience…it does not agree with me. I’ll spare you the details.
It has fully hydrogenated soybean oil that may contain trans fats. There is no safe intake level of trans fats. At any rate, you should not eat fully hydrogenated anything.
Also, there’s calcium propionate – an ingredient that can be problematic as well. It causes disruptions to the GI tract and possibly behavioral problems in children. Look it up.
In short, this keto bread could be a lot of trouble for your health and your GI tract. It’s another processed food to avoid.
